In Jewish tradition it is customary for a young man/lady to have a bar/bat mitzvah around age 12 (for young men), 13 (for young ladies). The bat mitzvah usually consists of: memorizing the full Hebrew alphabet, writing a Midrash, reciting of prayers in Hebrew, having parents pray a blessing over the individual, as well as a reception for friends and family to celebrate with the individual.
Recently, two young ladies shared with our group about their own bat mitzvahs. Told from their point of view it was very intriguing and insightful as to their reasons why they chose to have the ceremony. Their reasons: to gain more responsibility and to pursue spiritual change such as growing in their own faith.
