One Nation or Two Houses

by torahgirl

Notes from yesterday’s analysis of the Two House position…

What were the promises given to Abraham?

  • great name, a blessing to ALL people {Genesis 12, 18, 28; Zechariah 8}
  • multiply exceedingly & father a multitude of nations {Genesis 17, 46, 48}
  • relationship with HaShem {Genesis 17}
  • the Land of Canaan {Genesis 17}

What are the tenets of Two House?

  1. the Northern tribes {known as “Ephraim”} were captured and did not return from Babylon – they never rejoined the Southern tribes {known as “Judah”}.
  2. the Southern tribes {“Judah”} are what we know as Jews today, while the Northern tribes {“Ephraim”} are still lost and have been entirely assimilated into modern-day Gentile kingdoms.
  3. the blessing given to Ephraim in Genesis 49 is fulfilled by the infiltration of Israel into all nations.
  4. when Christians start keeping Torah we assume they have a hidden Jewish soul inside, which is why they were ‘drawn’ to the Torah of Israel in the first place.
  5. Judah {the Southern tribes} and Ephraim {the Northern tribes} comprise completed Israel.

Problems:

  • If all who come to Judaism are Israelites, the blessing to the Gentiles through Abraham cannot come to pass. Logically, we can’t all be Jews!
  • There were more Jews in Babylon than anywhere else in the world when Yeshua was born. It’s normal for Jews to remain in exile – look at how many there are in America today who don’t like the idea of moving to Israel!
  • Babylon is the same place the Southern tribes were taken.
  • The term “Jew” does NOT refer only to a person from the tribe of Judah.
  • Scripture makes it clear that the tribes in captivity knew who they were – they didn’t forget their heritage or lose their Jewishness. {Hosea 2, 5}
  • Believing we are “the new Israel” is simply soft anti-semitism or supercessionism.
    {these two are frequently combined, as seen in quotes like “Israel of the Scripture is totally distinct from the Jewish people.” -C.A.L. Totten, Yale University}
  • We are drawn to a lifestyle of obedience by the Spirit of G-d, not by our national heritage. As sinful people, nothing within ourselves can compel us to love and obey G-d. {Romans 7, Psalm 14}
  • Assimilation with the world cannot be G-d’s approach to blessing! HaShem hates syncretism {us being part of the culture}. He calls us to come out and be separate! He cannot bless what He has forbidden or cursed.

Consider

The response of disciplined children…
…because effective discipline leads to repentance. We have the story of the “Wise Men” as a result of the Babylonian captivity – Jewish scholars studying the Scriptures, eagerly awaiting the birth of the Messiah, and finally coming to honor the King.

Rebels find each other…
…and in the same way, Jews find each other! G-d’s people have an incredibly strong and resilient bond to each other. There is no way entire tribes could have forgotten their ancestry.

Egypt, Rome, England, Spain, and Portugal…
…all kicked out the Jews. This NEVER meant that the people in question stopped being Jewish – they were simply forced to relocate.

Judah {the Southern tribes} is described as far worse
…than Ephraim {the Northern tribes}. Yet Judah was allowed to return and keep their Jewish identity? This doesn’t make sense.

Did G-d’s people change so dramatically? “Vanishing Jews” from thousands of years ago are all the sudden found, in Messianic congregations? Even when Israel as a nation disobeyed G-d and broke His commandments, He always refers to their sin as mixing His ways with pagan culture, not losing Judaism.

Conclusion: if you’re part of the Two House movement, take time to study what you believe and why. Think about these points. You can find the audio recording of this class, “Two House Two Step” on Bella Torah’s website.Your thoughts and comments are welcome.

2 houses are what the Bible says…and in Ezekiel…they are joined into one…and it looks like that happens in the final ingathering????
Some people take a truth and warp it to fit their pride :>) All 14 of the tribes are represented by the term jew…it is a translation of judeans. or one from judea!
After Jereboam took command of the north, and he was an Ephraimite, he changed the place of worship away from Jerusalem, the time of worship from G-D’s dates, the method of worship, an object like and idol, and the priesthood. The Bible says that when that happened, the good guys in the north, all went south! They actually helped King Reheboam of Judah, stay good for two years the Bible says.
So there are no lost tribes…there are a lot of lost people of all the tribes that do not know who they are…but many of the people of all the tribes are finding their heritage today thru the internet.
But the promise of being a father to a great multitude of nations, was continued only to Ephraim. Soooooooooooo…we need to separate what the Bible says from our own pride or determination to be something :>)…and realize that one of the ways G_D could do this, is to loose a lot of His people around the world, and they intermarry and then let them find the truth…and it will touch a multitude of nations. Many Believers are from all the tribes and many unbelievers are from all the tribes…and the same with the Gentiles: Rahab, perhaps Caleb, and Jethro, Ruth, etc.
Bible fact is fact…I also want to be careful…I have been called a two houser…and I am…but I am also a baptist, a pentecostal, a catholic, a methodist, a presbyterian, a believer, assembly of G-D, a seventh day …part of the world wide church of G-D, church of the Messiah, etc but I don’t believe the ways they have ignored some scriptures and figured out their own little thing…
BUT THAT IS WHY IT IS IMPORTANT TO BE ONE BODY…ONE PEOPLE,…So we can keep looking diligently at the scriptures and keep on looking diligently at the scriptures together!!!…because it is pride to think that we could not be deceived or fooled or wrong…

But then, with you, I am still trying to search the scriptures humbly and daily to see if what the ‘other’ people say is true.

This teaching was what G-d wanted me to hear. I have wrestled with this teaching since I can remember. It sounded good when I heard the “Two House Teaching” but clearly, it was never fully explained, or I just did not understand what the true teaching was. During the time that this was taught on Shabbat, tears came to my eyes. Then I knew it was pure truth, since the Ruach HaKodesh, was revealing to me that what you taught was correct! So, I was so happy to meet people, of like minds and no agendas to prove that it is the word and not you, that is in charge of our lives. Thank you, that I am able to move on and let YHVH teach me all the things he wants me to understand and to make my life better.

@Loralee, thanks for sharing your thoughts! Absolutely, I agree Israel will be “ingathered” from the diaspora eventually. There is no question Jews are located all around the world right now. And you’re right, the phrase “two houses” IS found in Scripture. Northern vs. Southern, Israel vs. Judah, is a Biblical division. However, keep in mind HaShem also refers to BOTH parts as “Israel.”
Now, I’m not sure what you mean by “Many Believers are from all the tribes…and the same with the Gentiles.” Rahab, Jethro, and Ruth were not part of any Israelite tribe. Rahab was a Canaanite, Jethro was a Midianite, and Ruth was a Moabite. These people, at least some of them, joined themselves to Israel, and in the case of Rahab and Ruth, married Israelites, but I don’t agree they were “from all the tribes.”
No denomination is perfect… we agree there. {grin} It is my prayer as well, that we would search the Scriptures with diligence and humility, being “renewed in knowledge after the image of our Creator.”

“Let the peace of Messiah Yeshua rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body…” {Col 3}

@Mary Lynn, baruch HaShem for your obedience to G-d’s Spirit! We are thankful the teaching was beneficial to you. I see in you such a love for G-d and a desire to learn His ways. What a testimony to myself and others. As you are faithful to study, He is faithful to guide you in the truth. Blessings to you as you seek Him!

@torahgirl I have yet to study the whole “Two House” philosophy, although my current stance is against it. Therefore, I can’t really offer a comment on that.

BUT–

From what I read, I love your insight! This is quite a touchy topic, yet you went about it so politely (as much as possible). The Two-House movement is verrrry active in my area and unfortunately I’ve had no solid counterarguments when the issue has been mentioned. I’m bookmarking this post, because it’s to-the-point, makes sense, AND thought-provoking. THANKS!

you’re such an encouragement to me, @apple_core! thank you! i should have mentioned that these notes were from a class my father gave on Shabbat, so he gets the credit for well-organized notes and clear responses to the Two House position. =) we have a large Two House group north of Charlotte, so i know what you mean! it’s maybe not a *huge* theological issue, but still, might as well define where we stand, right? we have seen that Two House people usually tend to be close to the Karaite or Sacred Name movements as well.

glad this post was helpful to you! <3
